Accounting Management Solutions, a CliftonLarsonAllen LLP Division has been retained by the Middlesex Human Service Agency, Inc. (MHSA) to conduct a search for an Chief Financial Officer.
Organization
In its 39 years of continuous operation, Middlesex Human Service Agency, Inc. (MHSA) has maintained a steady focus on addressing the effects of homelessness, substance abuse and hunger through 10 programs in the City of Boston and Metro Boston area. The mission of MHSA, based in Waltham, MA, is to improve the quality of life and independent functioning of a wide variety of clients through the delivery of an extensive system of community-based substance abuse and social service programs.
MHSA employs several program models to combat community food insecurity, including a soup kitchen, food pantry and mobile food market. In addition, MHSA operates one of the Commonwealth’s largest family homeless shelter programs, two individual homeless shelters and two substance abuse recovery homes, as well as the Commonwealth’s only program for second offenders convicted of driving under the influence.
Position
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will report to the Chief Executive Officer and manage all financial activities of MHSA, a mid-sized, non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation, providing a multitude of services to various vulnerable populations in the Greater Boston Area.
Financial oversight includes strategic planning, budget preparations, ensuring overall financial integrity and government and contract fiscal compliance, and a team responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. This is an exempt, salaried position.
Responsibilities
- Day to day oversight of all financial activities and functions of the agency
- Appropriate delegation and monitoring specific functions of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll, supervising and interacting with the designated team members without engaging in micro-management
- Recruit, hire, train and manage financial department team members
- Assist and advise CEO in all financial matters of MHSA, with emphasis on:
- Strategic planning, assessment of financial strength, and implementation of plans
- Direction of budget development and oversight of contractual, financial obligations
- Conserve and maintain fiscal solvency in economic and government contract climates
- Potential and actual acquisitions, e.g., real estate, mergers, and program expansion
- Develop new relationships and maintain current relationships with business partners, joint venture officers, and associates
- Presentation of required and appropriate documentation and fiscal data to the Board of Directors
- Continuous exercise of superior communication skills in order to properly inform and educate the MHSA Management Team, middle management, information technology and other non-financial staff in fiscal matters, as needed and/or as directed by the CEO, to assist in achieving financial literacy throughout the agency
- Serve as primary agency contact for government and private contractor fiscal departments, engaged in billing, payables, and contract awards or monitoring
- Primary representative of the agency in all dealings and relationships with agency accountants and auditors, as well as governmental and other third-party fiscal agents, including, but not limited to, the IRS and the MA Department of Revenue.
Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Related Field
- MBA or other Graduate Degree in a related field
- CPA preferred
- Five (5) years’ as CFO; Fifteen (15) years financial or accounting experience
- Demonstrated experience in:
- Nonprofit financial budgeting and oversight
- State and Federal Contract Management
- Work with external auditors
- Acquisitions and mergers
- Knowledge of GAAP internal controls and financial reporting requirements
- Management of diverse team
- Demonstrated excellent written, verbal and computer skills
- Valid Driver’s License and reliable personal transportation
